I wrote this poem several years ago at the behest of my mother. She would occasionally call me and ask for a poem written on a certain topic or about a character whose name had come to her. That summer, she had called requesting a poem about a woman who fell in love with Ebeneezer Scrooge. Her name was to be Saucer-Eyed Sue. I am posting it here with minor re-writes.
How Love Found Scrooge
This is the story of Saucer-Eyed Sue
Who simpered and swooned over old Mr. Scrooge.
Now we all know the story,
Certainly we do,
of how Ebeneezer,
That skinflint old geezer,
Was so cheap and stingy
That kindly Bob and family
Could barely afford to buy tea —
No shoes, no treats,
No clothes, no meats.
That all came to an end one Christmas Eve.
Some ghosts showed him how no one would grieve
When Scrooge’s spirit did leave.
Not one tear would ever be shed
By one hearing that Scroogey was dead.
That all changed next morning when Scrooge awoke
He opened the window and yelled to the folk,
“I know I’ve been selfish and sour,
But today will be my finest hour!
I will be sure to share and to care
And give to poor people everywhere!”
From that day to this day
He has helped people in many a way
To make their lives better.
He’s become a baby-kisser, an animal-petter,
And a zippity-doo-dah singer too.
Yet, when the day is through,
He still goes home all alone
To a supper of beans and corn pone.
This chipper and dapper fellow,
Who is generous, smart, and mellow,
Is the very one over whom
Saucer-Eyed Sue chose to swoon.
Now the first time pretty little Sue
Met old Scrooge, it is true,
He was taking food to the poor
And nearly knocked her down
Coming through the door.
He said that he was sorry.
She told him not to worry.
She saw past his wrinkles and cane
To his big heart and big brain.
After courting for a year —
Everyone stop and give a cheer —
Scrooge and Sue got wed,
And this is what the paper said,
“Dressed in white from head to toe,
The beautiful bride stole the show.
Walking the aisle with regal stride,
All eyes were on Scrooge’s bride.
Something borrowed, something blue,
She had it all and then some too.”
They started a life of wedded bliss.
They’re both in love. How can they miss?
There you are, and now we’re through
With the story of Scrooge and Saucer-Eyed Sue!
