One Night Only

Emblazoned on the marquee:

ONE NIGHT ONLY

ZACH AND ERYN SAY I DO

They had met at a production of The Wizard of Oz. She had looked so cute in her gingham. He was handsome in his overalls with straw dangling in his face.

They met after rehearsals to run lines at the local diner. Afterward, they would order the waffles and eggs. Remembered stories of the rehearsal would fuel their appetites. There was no shortage of anecdotes, and they would relive them all, laughing into the night.

After the play had finished, the cast congregated at the theatre for the after-party. Although there were several hundred in the cast, it was clear to everyone that Zach and Eryn were the only two at the party. Their laughter competed with the music, even when they were awkward on the dancefloor.

Her eyes were bright with anticipation when he asked if Eryn wanted to get waffles and eggs after the party. She nodded with a smile.

At the diner, they fell into their routine. Eventually, Zach stood as if to go to the restroom. Instead, he knelt beside Eryn and presented a ring. She looked at him, her eyes begging for the obvious question.

“Dorothy, would you be willing to spend your life with a scarecrow?”

“YES! I love the scarecrow, especially my scarecrow!”

The diner erupted with applause as Zach pulled Eryn to her feet. They both blushed as they kissed, feeling the eyes of the diner on them. As they pulled apart, in unison, they said, “Let’s get married at the theatre!”
