The Secret

For years, he had kept the secret.

For years he had told a lie.

She never held his heart,

Even though she held his child.

His heart belonged to another

That he could never hold.

Was it fair to keep it from her,

To keep up the façade?

Or should he be truthful

And break her trusting heart?

Twenty years have come and gone.

He’s always played the part.

Loving husband, doting dad,

Confidant, best friend.

Perhaps the time has come

To bring it to an end.

Should he confess to her

And say that it’s all through,

Or find a circumstance

To start it all anew?
